Dear Friends and Family,
I’m writing to ask for your cheers and support as I prepare to complete the 8th Annual Bill Anderson Fund Disaster Dash! The Bill Anderson Fund (fondly known as the BAF) is a nonprofit organization that works to expand the number of historically underrepresented minority professionals in hazards and disaster research and practice. The BAF is helping to transform the disaster workforce and improve disaster outcomes through the powerful integration of these next generation leaders into organizations across the United States.
As some of you may know, I am a 2nd year doctoral student in climate science at UCSD-Scripps and a BAF Fellow. As a group, this community is committed to advocating for communities of color and other historically marginalized groups by promoting, researching, and advancing hazard and disaster mitigation.
This year, I’ve set a $300 fundraising goal to support this organization that has supported me on my academic journey. Will you please consider donating $10–or whatever amount is feasible for you–to help me reach my fundraising goal? Funds will help to support research grants, professional development training, and travel expenses for BAF Fellows.
The 2023 9th Annual BAF Disaster Dash will be held in concurrence with the 48th Annual Natural Hazards Research and Applications Workshop, an event with international attendance that will be hosted July 9-12 by the University of Colorado Boulder Natural Hazards Center.
Proceeds from the event will support the Bill Anderson Fund mission to expand the number of professionals from historically underrepresented groups in the fields of hazards and disaster research and practice. Funds raised during this event ensure the delivery of robust programming for our Fellows and Alumni. Join us in July and run or walk where you are to send a clear message on the vital need for additional representation in our field.
