I am running to help raise funds for Gould Farm, a therapeutic community which that quite literally saved my son’s life almost 12 years ago and continues to support him and our family to this day.
Dillon is a bright, creative, kind, sensitive, thoughtful, and generous young man.
As a kid, Dillon had a passion for baseball that persisted through high school and into college, though he ran cross country, played soccer and basketball and even worked out. But it wasn’t only sports that defined him. Dillon was never short of good friends and was the kid every parent wanted to play at their house. He was a talented saxophone player and loved many forms of music. From very early on he cared about other people and their struggles, always wanted to be able to help out, so he began studying political science in college.
But in 2007, when Dillon was 21 years old, his life’s path took a wild twist. He had been struggling mightily with his mental health for a couple of years, but despite his greatest efforts his brain chemistry won the battle. Dillon was hospitalized and diagnosed with Schizoaffective Disorder, a form of Schizophrenia. After four months of confinement the traditional medication regime and treatments were barely helping. I knew I had to find something else. That is when I learned of Gould Farm.
At the Farm, Dillon was met by a whole community of trusted professionals and staff who embraced his strengths, supported his participation through work on the Farm, addressed his clinical needs, and helped him learn to manage his mental illness. When ready, he was assisted with the transition toward full participation in work, social engagement, academic achievements, and the healthy recovery lifestyle he lives today. Gould Farm is always there with caring support and expert guidance.
Gould Farm helps people living with mental illness get their feet back under them and build the skills they need to regain their lives. I'm running to raise money for families who can't afford the road to recovery offered at Gould Farm without the help of financial aid.
Please support my run with your donation to the Gould Farm. (www.gouldfarm.org)
All money that is raised through this event will support our annual fund for financial assistance!
