Hey, good people! Eamonn and I were expecting to be walking on May 2nd in the 8th Annual Sojourner Truth Walk: Honoring Healthcare Providers and other Frontline Workers.
But, then came COVID-19, so the walk is turning into a "Valk" -- a virtual walk!
I'll be walking in honor of my sister-in-law, Sarah Patrick. Sarah is a nurse at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, working the night shift on a lung unit, and then heading home each morning to her family. Sarah is a fierce advocate for her patients and co-workers.
Camp Sojourner is still active during this time of schools and activities shutting down: They have been offering online “Sojo Lunch Breaks” each weekday while schools are closed, led by young adult alums and staff. Daily workshops include history, cooking, creative arts, mindfulness, yoga, camp songs, and more. They are also providing support groups and practical support to some of the young adult alum who have had to leave college and jobs abruptly and have needed help with housing, internet access, counseling, and other essential resources.
Money raised from this virtual walk will support Camp Sojourner, a nonprofit leadership program for Philadelphia girls ages 8-18, which offers year-round leadership development including mentoring, service projects, creative arts, nature hikes, college tours, and a one week overnight camp (girlsleadershipcamp.org).
Camp Sojourner, Girls’ Leadership Camp helps Philadelphia girls -- regardless of their economic background -- have the opportunity to take charge of their own lives and be agents of positive change in their communities. All programs are offered on a sliding scale, with significant scholarships.
Please consider sponsoring me, and help support Philly girls!
