In 2015, my dad passed away from cancer. Learning of his illness was extremely shocking and utterly devastating! My first thought was, how could something so terrible happen to such a great person-- a loving, courageous, and healthy person. My dad, Wilfred Brandon Jr., was a strong, selfless, and respectable man who believed in his family and encouraged us to perform academically. Work smarter was his mantra. One of my most fond memories of him is the way he smiled after I passed my dissertation defense and was called "doctor" for the first time. This moment was particularly special because it was just before he received the diagnosis that would change our lives foreve. He was in a lot of pain at this time and could barely walk, but he never complained. He was selfless.
In addition to scholarship, my dad was the KING of exercise. He enjoyed running 5 miles from the YMCA, around the City of Johnstown, and back to the Y, where he would then lift weights. When the doctors told him his knees were bad and he couldn't run anymore--he walked. That's just the type of guy that he was, determined, inspirational, courageous...strong willed.
In light of my dad's legacy, my family and I created the WILLStrong Foundation!! The Foundation is in honor of my dad, Will, but most importantly, it is founded with the vision of "a healthy and empowered community." We have made it our mission to promote community development, scholarship, and health in the Greater Johnstown area.
It is with great pleasure (and relief) that we will host our SECOND annual walk/run :-). This event is especially dear to us because we will mirror my dad's daily route. We encourage you to join in and donate to this special event. Please register for this event as an attendee or virtual participant.If you cannot join us, please make a donation anyway. This year, proceeds from the event will support the Wilfred and Karen (Carter) Scholarship Fund and the Women's Help Center of Johnstown.

Event proceeds will fund scholarships for area students in all school districts as well as programmatic activity centered on education, community development, and health promotion. We are excited to annouce that this year's monetary commnity appreciation award will go to the Women's Help Center in Johnstown, PA.
