As a board member, I'm participating in the Walk to End FGM (Female Genital Mutilation), a sponsored 5k walk in Washington, D.C.--virtual in 2020! FGM is a non-religious, cultural practice in which part or all external female genitalia are removed. It's physically and emotionally harmful. Many girls die from FGM. Those who survive may suffer lifelong physical and emotional health problems. Some 85% of maternal and infant mortality in Africa is the result of FGM.

 

FGM is common in various countries throughout the world but is also forced upon girls who live in the United States. I became interested in stopping this practice because it affects more than 70,000 women and girls in the D.C. Metro area.
