About Us

Founded in 1980 by Philadelphia Orchestra cellist Bert Phillips and Steinway pianist Toby Blumenthal, Luzerne Music Center aims to provide world-class music instruction for passionate young people in a summer camp environment regardless of their financial circumstance. Musicians between the ages 9 and 18 come from all over the world to train at LMC's campus located in the foothills of New York’s Adirondack Park.

The campus, established in 1909 as “Camp Tekakwitha,” is 20 wooded acres consisting of recreational facilities, student cabins, faculty housing, a charming Adirondack performance lodge, an outdoor performance shed, practice building, dining hall, administration building and a natural sandy beachfront on Lake Luzerne.

LMC offers private instruction in composition, conducting, singing, jazz, and weekly lessons for all instruments including piano, strings, winds, brass and percussion. The curriculum includes ear-training & rhythm, daily chamber music & orchestral training, brass and wind choirs, masterclasses and sectionals. Luzerne's dedicated faculty is comprised of 26 highly trained professionals who perform in leading symphonic and chamber ensembles and teach at the top music schools across the nation.

Students attend public on-campus performances each week that feature internationally acclaimed guest artists in the Luzerne Chamber Music Festival and the esteemed LMC Faculty in a self-curated Friday evening series. Students also frequent the Saratoga Performing Arts Center to watch concerts featuring the Philadelphia Orchestra, New York City Ballet and Opera Saratoga.
