Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How do I begin?

A: Just register and start "selling" coats to your family, friends, and acquaintances!

You can create & manage your own personal fundraising page, share your personal message, goals & get sponsors. You need only have family and friends buy 10 coats at $30 a coat to participate in the Coat Trekker Challenge.

We thank you for making a commitment to the trek and for raising funds for the Coats for Cold Kids project. You have taken a great step in fighting poverty as well as literally following the footsteps of 35 heroes!

Q: What does participation mean, exactly?  What is the schedule of the Trek?

A: By participating in this event and committing to raising money for this important cause, you are helping to raise funds to purchase winter coats for needy children thoughout Israel.

The goal of the Coat Trekker Challenge is to raise enough money to purchase as many coats as possible with your help. If you are able to raise a minimum of 10 coats at $30 each you will take part in a very special program trekking in historic footsteps. The challenge of your participaton is twofold 1. assisting to furnish coats to those who can't afford them and 2. taking on and completing the trek to Gush Etzion.

Even if scheduling, health, or a multitude of other reasons does not allow for you to join us for the trek you can still raise funds and help us coat the kids.

Q: How can my sponsors submit payment?

A: Online contributions can be made by credit card on the participant’s personalized page found on the coats for cold kids fundraising website.  Just make sure to tell your sponsors to select your name from the list of participants or you can send a direct link to your personal fundraising page via email, facebook or other to your friends and family.

Q: I am concerned that I might not be able to raise the goal amount that I specified on my personal fundraising page.

A: Even if you've never raised money before, our materials and strategies will help you to solicit and raise sponsorships from friends, family, colleagues, neighbors, and others. Experience has shown that it is not only possible, but enjoyable, to set and reach your goals.  Please update your personal reason for participating and upload your picture on your profile by logging on to your personal fundraising page. On your personal fundraising page you will also find sample letters that can be used to send out to friends and family.

Q:  What happens if I am unable to hike all night or can't make it to the end of the trail?

A: Not a problem, people are sponsoring you for your effort to hike this historic trail.  They are not sponsoring you to finish it but in support of your attempting to finish it. If you can't finish it or have a medical issue, at multiple areas along the route there will be a "Toe Car" to pick you up and take you to the finish area and a medic to tend to you.

Q: How fit do I have to be to hike?

A: This is no different than any other hike you will take part in at your Yeshiva or Midrasha or with the family. We are going to assemble at the staging area at 10:00 pm and start the Coat Trekker Challenge at 10:30 pm. Of course, if you have special needs, please let us know and we will discuss possibilities with you.

Q: What should I wear?

A: The hike is going to take place over night. Therefore, it is best to wear layered clothing and have a backpack for your things this way you can take off layers as you warm up on the hike yet put them back on after we finish. No sandals, slip-ons, flip flops, or anything open. Wear comfortable athletic or hiking shoes but nothing new or too good as conditions can be wet or even muddy along the trail. Wear clothes that do not bind but do protect you from bushes and weeds especially around the ankles up to the knees. For women who prefer skirts wear sweats underneath.
Definitely bring a hand held flashlight/torch or "headlight" with adjustble band to fit snuggly on your head.

Q: What if I walk slowly? Will I be left behind?

A: There will be two groups each night. We will ask participants to pick either a regular pace or slow pace so you can determine your comfort level based on your own personal ability. Who knows YOU better than you do! The hike will take a number of hours so feel free to "plant" snacks you prefer for the journey in your knapsack.

Q: Can I bring a camera and phone?

A: You sure can take pictures along the way and we will be happy to receive your best ones. We will ask that your phones be on silent and that you do not answer or make calls during the hike in respect to those around you who might want to experience this as did the original soldiers that fateful night of January 18, 1948.

Q: How do I start my own fanpage for fundraising?

A: You can now create & manage your own personal page, share your photos, goals & get sponsors by clicking the "Register To Participate" button on the home page.

Q: If my donors want to send checks to who is it made out and where do I send them?

A: Not a problem, make out checks to:

Leeba Gavriella Fund for the Needy
